  • Key identification features : A monoecious palm with pinnately compound leaves. Inflorescence arises between leaves and is pendulous. Flowers are inconspicuous and the male flowers bear many stamens. Fruit is a drupe.

  • Comments : The only genus among palms to have bipinnately compound leaves; wood is used for making agricultural implements. Leaves yield a strong fibre known as 'Kittul Fibre', inner Stem yields starchy substrate used as food. Also, used as staple food for Temple Elephants. Cut spadix inflorescence yields toddy, which on boiling Jaggery is obtained

    If the Starchy substance from inner part is washed n dried white flour we get. That is used as medicine to cure constipation n heat infection for the stomach.
