  • Key identification features : A small evergreen tree with straight trunk and smooth bark. Leaves are simple, opposite and are red when young. Flowers are large, 8-12 cm across, sepals and petals are four in each whorl. Stamens are numerous. Fruits are 3 cm across, ovoid, pointed, woody, with enlarged calyx. Bark is dull-brown, faintly fissured.

  • Comments : Occasional in evergreen forests near streams. Often planted for its valuable timber.
