  • Key identification features : A stout aquatic perennial herb with erect, unbranched stem. Leaves are simple, in whorls, strap-like, accompanied by straight and long spines. Flowers (about 3 cm. across) are generally in four pairs at each node with conspicuous hairy bracts. Fruit is a linear capsule.
