  • Comments : A monocarpic species. Occurs mostly towards the low, moist coastal regions. Sometimes cultivated in gardens on hills. The leaves are used for thatching and for making umbrellas, fans, baskets and mats. Strips of leaves have been used for writing, in the past. Edible starch can be extracted from the pith of the stem prior to the initiation of flowering. The hard endosperm of the seed is ivory-like and used for making beads, buttons and other ornamental articles.
