- Key identification features : An erect much branched stout herb or undershrub, usually armed with prickles. Leaves are ovate, sinuately lobed, softly stellately pubescent. Flowers are usually solitary, with calyx lobes being solitary and enlarging in fruit. Corolla is bluish. Berry is large and pendant. Often cultivated as a fruit which are used as a vegetable.
