  • Key identification features : A red flowered water lily. Leaves are reddish, greenish-brown, hairy beneath. Flowers are purplish-red, opens at night and mildly fragrant. Similar to N.pubescens Willd. but differs mainly in colour of leaves, flowers and in being completely sterile. N.rubra Roxb. ex Andrews originally claimed to be a native of Bengal, never sets fruits in nature and appears to be an obligate apomictic species.
