  • Key identification features : An elegant tall tree with a dense crown. Bark grey and rough. Leaves are simple, elliptic, lush-green and leathery with insect galls. Numerous flowers (1.5-2 cm across) aggregate into dense cluster with numerous long, white stamens. The edible fruits are globose to oblong, often single-seeded berries, which are deep-purple to black when ripe.

  • Comments : Occasional in plains to 1400 m in a variety of habitats, in sholas, river banks and also planted as avenue tree.
