  • Habitat : Mixed forest
  • Key identification features : A small size much-branched evergreen tree. Young branches are covered with short rusty hairs. Leaves are simple, ovate-lanceolate and strongly three-nerved with minute glands underneath. Flowers are unisexual, male and female flowers occurring on different trees in terminal elongate inflorescences. Male floweers are clustered whereas the female flowers are solitary. Fruit is a three-lobed orange-red small capsule.

  • Comments : Often on hills to 800 m, on slopes, by shola border, in forest clearings etc. Very common. Fruits are bright red and are used to extract dye.
