Earlier research on S. littoreus suggested this species had earlier existed/originated on the east African coast - and was subsequently spread westwards by its natural dispersal habit. The seed ball being easily caught by any wind exceeding about 4m/second, and the seeds themselves share the same halophyte status of the parent plants to survive long oceanic transport.
