- Key identification features : A tall woody bamboo with thorny culms, numerous and tufted, up to 40 m. tall, curving at top bearing recurved, stout spines. The lowest nodes bear roots. Stem-sheaths are leathery, orange-yellow when young, hairy outside, shining and ribbed inside. Leaves are thin, linear, up to 20 cm. long. Inflorescence is a panicle of enormous size, the branchlets with clusters of spikelets.
