  • Key identification features : A massive herb with a pseudostem that is swollen at base. Leaves 2-3m long, alternate, oblong-lanceolate with convolute sheath, venation striate. Inflorescence terminal,large. Flowers 20-30 to each bract, upper cluster of male flower and lower female. Flowers irregular, outer 3 tepals connate into a split tube, 2 inner connate with outer ones , 3 inner tepals free. Stamens 5. Ovary inferior. Fruit an elongated berry.
