  • Key identification features : A moderate-sized deciduous tree. Leaves are crowded at the branch ends and are minutely toothed. Flowers are about 1.5 cm. across, deep scarlet, fragrant and are produced in beautiful, pendulous racemes with four petals and numerous exserted stamens. Fruit is oblong, 3 cm long, angular and smooth. Bark is dark brown, rugged with vertical furrows.
