  • Key identification features : An evergreen tree of dense foliage. Leaves are ovate-oblong, 7-18 cm. long. Young ones are brightly coloured and very attractive. The flowers are arranged in panicles, greenish, and have a distinct odor. The fruit is a purple berry, containing a single seed. Bark is smoke-grey and smooth.

  • Comments : Bark, leaves are used as spice; Cinnamomum Oil is extracted from leaves; Medicinal Oil is extracted from fruits; Root bark yields excellent camphor. Frequent in coastal plains and windward side of Western ghats upto 150 m alt.
