  • Key identification features : A shrub or a medium-sized deciduous tree up to 18 m high. Young trees are armed with strong conical thorns. Bark is grey to dark brown, with longitudinal cracks. Leaves are simple, elliptic-oblong, brown pubescent on the lower surface; lateral nerves 18-25 pairs, usually forked near the margin. Flowers are borne in clusters on an elongated spike. Petals are 5, clawed, cucullate and dentate in male and with a corona in female. Stamens are borne on a gynophore. Styles 2, stigma bifid. Fruit is a 1-seeded pyrene.
