  • Key identification features : A small evergreen tree with straight trunk and smooth bark. Leaves are simple, opposite and are red when young. Flowers are large, 8-12 cm. across; sepals and petals are four in each whorl. Stamens are numerous. Fruits are 3 cm. across, ovoid, pointed, woody with enlarged calyx. Bark dull-brown, faintly fissured.

    Celastrus paniculatus Willd. subsp. aggregatus K.T. Mathew has been reported from Kumta, UttaraKannada district in 2011.This collection of subsp. aggregatus from central Western Ghats is an addition to the flora of Karnataka State and also connects the distribution link of this taxon between southern and northern Western Ghats Ref: Hegde, Gurumurthi R. & G. R. Hegde 2011. Report on the extended distribution of two endemic plants (Angiospermae) in the central Western Ghats of Karnataka, India. Journal of Threatened Taxa 3(4): 1731– 1734.
